Beach Clean Up

On Thursday, 9U braved the cold and wet to participate in a beach clean up. We were joined by Ruth Baldwin from our local iwi and Scott Martin from the Balclutha Council.

Ruth taught us about Māori waste disposal practices and showed us the remains of a Māori midden pit. For the main activity, we split into groups. One group collected, grouped and weighed the rubbish found in a small area. This data is part of a year long study of the area. The second group did a general clean up of the rest of the beach. The weather might have been miserable, but 9U got stuck in and stayed cheerful and positive for the whole day.

Special thanks to Scott Martin and Ruth Baldwin for helping make the trip happen.
