Reader’s Cup is a national competition run in regional heats to share and celebrate the love of reading.
Small teams of Year 9 students read a set list of texts and then compete against each other schools in the Otago area to show their understanding of the books. Toby Deverson and Charlotte Jamieson competed on Tuesday afternoon via Google Meets. Their set texts were:
When the World Was Ours by Liz Kessler
The Bone Tiki by David Hair
Dry by Neil Schuterman
Katipo Joe by Brian Falkner
Cuz by Liz van der Laarse
Rainfall by Ella West
Some of the things Toby and Charlotte said while competing; “I loved that book! It made me so happy”, “Oh, yeah. That one was good!”, “Yes! I’ve got this!”
They came 2nd overall only missing out by 4.5 points, and the winning team had 5 members! Well done!
There is a year-long Year 10 equivalent with a longer list of set texts running with an enthusiastic group of Year 10 readers who will compete in Battle of the Bibliophiles later this year.
